Bus From Singapore To KL: What To Expect

 

Travelling by bus from Singapore to KL is the most affordable way to make the journey and, if road trips are your thing, the best way to travel between both cities.

Located at the tip of the Malaysian Peninsula, Singapore is 355km from Kuala Lumpur. The bus trip from Singapore to KL will take, on average 6 hours, depending on traffic. It tends to take slightly longer than bus companies will tell you.

Having just travelled this route for the second time, I wanted to share with you details on travelling by coach from Singapore to KL.

Bus From Singapore To Kuala Lumpur

Travelling by coach from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur is easy and quite simple, but there are a few things that I find important to highlight.

First of all, there is no bus station as such in Singapore. Buses depart from different locations in the city and some bus companies have offices near each other or in the same building. That is the case with most buses doing the Singapore-KL route.

Many bus companies have their offices at Golden Mile Tower (6001 Beach Road), about 300m from the famous Arab Street and many good hotels.

This is also where many buses depart and you can buy your tickets at the bus company office or online, which is more convenient. It’s important to remember that the Singapore to Malaysia bus fare varies considerably.

I paid 20SGD for my ticket with Billion Stars Express and the bus was comfortable, but other companies were charging 30 and even 40SGD. To me, the only downside to travelling with them is the fact there is no wifi aboard.

The seat configuration is 1+2 and, when booking online, I selected a single seat, but when my ticket was printed at the office, I got a seat in the 2-people row.

I took the afternoon bus and it arrived right at the time it was meant to depart. We left Golden Mile Tower with a 15-minute delay.

Singapore To Malaysia Border Crossing

After nearly one hour on Singapore’s busy highways, we finally got to the border control. Overall, the Singapore-Malaysia border crossing was quite straight forward. First, we got to the Singaporean side of the border.

Bus from Singapore to KL: Singaporean Immigration

Before getting off the bus at Tuas Checkpoint, for the Singapore immigration, you have to bring all your hand-luggage. The rest of your luggage will stay on the bus. You will then line up to clear immigration, which is now completely electronic nowadays.

Take the “all passports” line and insert your passport in the reader. After that, you will have to place your right thumb on the thumb reader screen.

After that, you’re good to go. If you arrived in Singapore by plane, like me, you will receive a departure card, but since I departed overland and the system is fully electronic, no one collected the card and neither did I get a passport stamp.

It is important that you try to stick with your fellow passengers because the bus will not depart until all passengers have boarded.

Singapore To KL Bus: Malaysian Immigration

After 10 minutes of driving in pretty much no man’s land, you will get to the Malaysian side of the border control. This time, you must bring all your belongings with you.

Join one of the lines and, once you see the officer, he/she will ask you to place both your index fingers in the reader.

After that, your passport will be stamped and you will proceed to customs control. Place your luggage in the x-ray and collect it on the other side. There are dozens of buses, so I highly recommend you write down or take a photo of your bus and the number plate.

Continuing Your Journey To Kuala Lumpur

Around four hours after departure from Singapore, the bus stopped at Summer Rest Station. The place has several small shops selling mostly local products, Chinese-style dried fruits and seafood, snacks and non-alcoholic drinks.

The place also has several ATMs, where you can get Malaysian ringgits, toilets and ice-cream shop. There is no public wifi anywhere at this rest station.

From here, the bus continues to Kuala Lumpur and makes a few stops in KL before their final stop at Berjaya Times Square (address: 1 Jalan Imbi, Bukit Bintang), only 2km from KL Sentral and the famous Merdeka Square. The city is one of the top places to visit in Malaysia and the country’s gateway.
