Zhongshan District

Zhongshan is where you will find some of the best hotels in Taipei. This is the best place to stay in Taipei if you’re looking for an area with a more laidback residential feel and a booming art scene.

In Zhongshan you can find many good restaurants, cafes and a great mix of local and fine arts. It is here that you will find the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the only in the city dedicated to modern art, with 24 galleries.

Other interesting and quirky museums are the Miniatures Museum of Taiwan, the SuHo Memorial Paper Museum and the historical Li An Tai Ancestral House, which represents the traditional homestead of Taiwan.

Wanhua District

I stayed longer in Wanhua, since many of the things to see in Taipei are here. It’s a good place to stay in Taipei if you want to experience the best of both worlds: Ximending, the northern side of Wanhua, is a buzzy area with lots of neon lights, busy streets with hawkers, small restaurants, street food and good cheap shopping.

On the other hand, the southern side of Wanhua is filled with historical houses hidden in narrow alleyways with one or another guest house or a local restaurant.

Wanhua is served by Ximen station, which has 2 lines, and Xiaonanmen station.

Westgate Hotel

This is one of the best hotels in Wanhua District: modern, perfectly located near Ximen station and with a nice restaurant, a bar and a gym.

Da’an District

Da’an District is one of the best places to stay in Taipei if you want to be in a residential area with a bustling night market and lots of green spaces.

The name means “great peace” and probably comes from the peace and quiet you will find at Taipei’s largest park, located here. Da’an is one of the expats’ favorite areas to live in Taipei and, despite being more residential, here you can find many cool and trendy bars.

Things to do in Da’an include a visit to Tonghua Night Market, famous for its street food, a stroll or morning run around Da’an Forest Park, which at 64 acres is Taipei’s largest green area.

You can also do some high-end shopping at one of Zhongxiao Road’s many shopping malls, including Breeze Center and SOGO Pacific. The nearby Zhongxiao Fuxing station is the departure point if you want to visit Maokong.

Perhaps the main thing to do in Beitou is to visit the famous hot springs. A visit to the recently restored Hot Springs Museum, a former thermal bathhouse built just over a century ago that was once Asia’s largest bathhouse of its kind.

In the same area you can also find Beitou Museum, where you can learn about the area’s history and the Japanese colonial era. Overall, life in Beitou goes at a slower pace, making it one of the best places to stay in Taipei.
