Up until recently, few people outside the CIS countries (those who used to be part of the USSR) were familiar with Azerbaijan. After some investment from the government, especially in sports, the country is starting to get more visibility and tourism is also increasing.

So, if you’re planning a trip to Azerbaijan, let me tell you how to go from Baku airport to the city centre.

About Baku International Airport

Heydar Aliyev International Airport (Baku Airport) is located only 24km from the city centre and is very modern, with all the conveniences you can expect from a world-class airport.

As soon as you go through immigration, you will have a number of duty-free shops – yes, they’re located both in the arrivals and departure areas.

Baku airport also offers free wifi and you can find a bank and ATMs both on airside and after you cross the arrivals gate, where you can change all major currencies, including US dollar, Russian rubles, euros, Turkish liras and British pounds.

Baku Airport Transfers

This is the option I usually recommend if you want to have a stress-free arrival experience and a safe journey from Baku airport to the hotel.

You can arrange the airport transfer through your hotel (at a cost, of course) or book online. I used this company several times and decided to partner with them – so, if you book your Baku airport transfer using this link, I’ll receive a small commission, but you won’t pay anything more for that.

The advantage is that won’t need to look for taxi drivers – the driver will be waiting for you by the arrivals gate.

Also, there will be no money transaction on the spot, as you will have paid in advance. Sample fares are:

Baku Airport-City Centre: from 26USD for up to 4 people and 3 pieces of luggage in a VW Golf, Ford Focus or similar vehicle.

Baku Luxury Airport Transfer in Mercedes S Class: from 75USD for up to 4 people.

Baku Airport Taxi

Many airports around the world have the problem of unofficial drivers offering “taxi, taxi” to arriving tourists. Although this has changed drastically, you can still be approached by people offering to drive you to your hotel, which I totally advise you against.

At Baku airport, as soon as you cross the arrivals gate, you will see signs showing “Official Taxi”. You can follow those signs and, once you get to the official pick-up area, a staff member will assign you to a taxi. You can pay either by cash or credit/debit card.

In addition, there are some London-style cabs, here called White Cab or London Cab, which park near the Official Taxi rank. Always make sure the meter is switched on as soon as you get in.

Take an Uber – Kind of

A good alternative to car transfers and definitely taxis, is taking a car service similar to Uber, called Bolt. Their cars and services are as good, but cost slightly lower. Just download the Bolt app, turn on wifi and book it. Here I give you a juicy discount on your first ride with Bolt.

Baku Aiport Bus

The most affordable way to go from Baku Airport to the city is with the Aero Express Bus. The buses work 24 hours a day and leave from just outside the arrivals terminal, with their final stop at Baku Central Railway Station (28 May Station).

The journey takes around 30 minutes, depending on traffic, and depart roughly every half hour, with an hourly frequency between 9pm and 6am.  The journey costs 1.50AZN and, to use it, you must buy the BakuKart, the city’s public transport card at the BakuKart kiosk in Terminal 1.
