Muscat decided to change the game in the Gulf cultural scene back in 2011. In October that year, the country opened the region’s first centre dedicated to the classical music and ballet, with the inauguration of the city’s opera house. In this post, I will be listing the Royal Opera House Muscat performances for 2020.

The first performance was with Turandot, by Puccini, and it counted with the presence of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos.

Now, years later, the Royal Opera House Muscat has consolidated its place as the premier stage in the Gulf region for the fine arts. In October 216, it opened its doors to the public with a number of exhibitions, concerts and interactive events.

December 2019

12th & 13th: Chick Corea With Spain’s Symphony Orchestra of Castilla y Leon

Multi Grammy Award winner Chick Corea is considered a living legend. The jazz and fusion multi-instrumentalist’s work includes 500 Mile High and Spain, which are considered jazz milestones.  With music conducted by Ion Marin, Chick Corea will play many of his numbers, as well as Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

19th & 20th: Che Malambo

This spectacular Argentinean all-male dance company comes to Muscat with a new production by French choreographer Gilles Brinas. Their Royal Opera House Muscat performance will not be short of powerful and fast-paced dances including zapateo, which are steps inspired by the rhythm of galloping horses.

27 & 28th: Sukhishvili Georgian National Ballet

Co-founded by Iliko Sukhishvili and Nino Ramishvili in 1945, the Georgian National Ballet has performed all over the world in places such as the Rome Colosseum, Royal Albert Hall. Now, the Georgian National Ballet brings to the Royal Opera House Muscat their powerful choreography which combines men’s complex athletic feats with the effortless and graceful footwork by the women.

Performance Time: 7pm on 27th, 4pm on 28th

30th & 31st: Vienna Classical Players

The Viennese waltz evokes the name of Strauss, due to his contribution to the music. Conducted by Martin Kerschbaum, the Vienna Classical Players will perform two concerts with music by the Strauss family, Johan Schrammer and Leroy Anderson, to name a few. The music will be accompanied by four couples from the Wiener Staatsballet.

January 2020

2nd, 3rd & 4th: The Magic Flute by Mozart – Conducted by Davide Livermore

Opening the Royal Opera House Muscat performances in 2020, Davide Livermore will conduct a new performance of The Magic Flute based on Omani traditions. This innovative show combines elements of the Omani culture, the wider Arab traditions and the original elements of Mozart’s The Magic Flute. The opera will be performed by the orchestra “I Barocchisti”.

16th, 17th & 18th: Oman World Folk Music Festival

This is the second edition of this fantastic 3-day festival that brings together Omani and Arab artists with those from the Americas, Asia, Africa and Europe. Music and dance performers from all over the world bring their own culture and traditions to the stage of the Royal Opera House Muscat to celebrate the world’s artistry and technical prowess through the expression of world music.

23rd, 24th & 25th: Onegin, Performed by Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet

Based on Pushkin’s novel, the choreography for Onegin brings influences of folk, modern, acrobatic and ballroom styles. The music by Tchaikovsky was orchestrated by Kurt-Heinz Stolze. The Bolshoi Ballet is one of the world’s ballet powerhouses and regularly performs at the Royal Opera House Muscat.

February 2020

6th & 7th: London Symphony Orchestra, Conducted by Gianandrea Noseda

Guest conductor Gianandrea Noseda brings two different performances of the London Symphony Orchestra to Muscat. On 6th February, the repertoire will include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C Minor and Dawn on the Moskva River, by Mussorgsky. On 7th February, the orchestra will perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2, followed by the Symphony No.5 in E Minor by Tchaikovsky.
