On my latest trip to Asia, I flew to Bangkok on two different occasions. When I returned from Phuket, I decided to try another part of the city. This time, I was having a two-night stay at the Metropole Bangkok The Crest Collection by Ascott Ltd, which offers very elegant serviced residences in the Thonglor area.

This newly opened property impressed me from check-in to check-out and every minute in between. As soon as I arrived, coming from Don Mueang Airport, I was greeted by the smartly dressed doormen who directed me to the front desk. I sat down to check-in, admiring the strikingly beautiful interiors, with walls covered by dark wood panels from floor to ceiling, giving it a very masculine feel and a touch of colonial charm.

The lobby area is very spacious, with some flower arrangements and a grand piano on one side. At the other end, there were several dark leather sofas next to bookshelves – an invitation to relax and socialise in an uber-cool, yet tasteful environment.

MY STUDIO AT METROPOLE BANGKOK

My first-floor room was a Studio. Like the name suggests, it was like a real studio apartment, with everything in one place. It was around 27sq metres, with a huge king-size bed and a classic decoration that was very much up my street.

As stylish as the downstairs lobby area, my room had everything I – or any business or leisure travellers – would need: a very comfortable bed, a small round working table and a beautiful leather armchair. Some small but valuable extras that need to be mentioned are the complimentary water and fresh fruits.

Add to that a fully equipped kitchenette with a fridge, cooker, microwave, kitchen utensils, a kettle, an espresso machine and washing machine. Yes, I had a washing machine! I did make a point of doing my laundry there and the machine was very quiet, so it didn’t disturb me when I was working.

The room had a layout that didn’t make it feel packed

Despite all that, the room felt quite spacious and very luxurious. I loved waking up and using the espresso machine to make my own coffee while I worked on some projects. If you’re a tea person, they offer a nice selection of classic and herbal teas, as well.

The bathroom was also very neat, with a bathtub and good pressure shower. The sink with metal basin screamed style. They also had some high-quality Harnn toiletries with an incredible fragrance. There was also a small tray with vanity, dental and shaving kits. I used the shaving kit and was quite happy with the result – no cuts at all, something that rarely happens to me… yay!

THE FACILITIES AT METROPOLE BANGKOK

I must confess that, on this leg of my trip to the Thai capital, I spent most of my time at Metropole. Yes, the room was so comfortable that I felt it would be a waste not to enjoy my room properly – working, obviously – as well as the other hotel facilities.

The hotel has an in-house spa, Prim Nurture Retreats, located on the ground floor, where I had a head, back & shoulder massage, but they offer a whole range of more complex therapies.

I loved swimming in the pool – before it rained!

A great place to relax is the good-sized outdoor pool. Considering the scorching heat of Bangkok, a nice and refreshing pool is always welcome, especially if you visit Bangkok with kids. I went for a swim one morning and enjoyed a good hour alternating between the outdoor pool, the sauna and a jacuzzi. It was like a ritual, from one to another and the other until my body needed some caffeine.

WINING AND DINING

If you want to dine without leaving the comfort of the Metropole Bangkok, you can just walk a few metres from the lobby to CHOW Café and Bar. The restaurant, like the rest of the hotel, is very stylish and offers a mix of fusion Asian-Californian cuisine and killer cocktails.

It is also here that you can have breakfast in the morning. I regret not dining here one evening but did make the point of stopping for a coffee and a chat with the team.

THONGLOR, THE LOCATION

It was my first time staying in Thonglor, an area I was not familiar with. It is a very happening area with everything you need pretty much at a stone’s throw from the hotel. There are many convenience stores, from the usual 7/Eleven to independent ones, popular and high-end shops, cafes and shopping malls nearby. The SkyTrain is only 10 minutes away.

This is Bangkok and, although Thonglor is a more upmarket area, you can walk 200 metres to enjoy some street food by the side of the road or a more fancy restaurant. But if you don’t want to leave the hotel or dine at CHOW, there’s a Domino Pizza in the same building – I did go there for a bite before bed and loved the fact I didn’t have to talk far.

FINAL THOUGHTS

When I initially said that Metropole Bangkok impressed me every minute between check-in and check-out, I do mean it. I found the hotel absolutely stunning, with its mixture of classic colonial style and cool modern touches.

I really liked my room layout, décor and facilities. I wouldn’t say that Metropolitan Bangkok should be classified as “serviced apartments”. They are serviced apartments with a soul!

From arrival to departure, every single member of staff had a nice smile on their face and was keen to help. As a hotel person, I’ve been to many fantastic hotels around the world with great professional service. But here I felt that their eagerness to assist and make things work were very genuine, from the heart, rather than just professional.

Would I come back? Oh, you bet!
