Montenegro is one of the hottest tourist destinations in Europe and the number of tourists visiting the country is increasing every year.

Podgorica Airport is the main entry point for those flying into the country – the other airport in the country is located in Tivat.

Since most tourists travelling to Montenegro don’t stay in the capital, here I will talk about transport from Podgorica airport to the city, as well as Budva and Kotor.

About Podgorica Airport

Podgorica Airport is very compact and is situated in near the town of Golubovci and is only 11km from Podgorica (pronounced podgoritsa).

With the capacity to serve up to one million passengers a year, the new airport was completed in 2006. The airport offers free wifi, which is great, since Montenegro is not included in most European free roaming plans.

Once you come through the arrivals hall, there are several travel agencies and car rental counters.

The tourist information counter is located on the right, between the arrivals gate and the check-in counters.

There are also two cafes. If you’re looking to withdraw money, there is an ATM machine on the left of the arrivals gate, squashed between a car hire counter and another door. Although Montenegro is not in the EU, they use the euro.

Transport From Podgorica Airport To The City, Budva and Kotor

Podgorica Airport is very close to the city itself. Despite that, there is no direct public transport from Podgorica Airport to the city. Below are the options available.

Trains From Podgorica Airport To The City

You may be wondering what I mean, since I’ve just said there is no direct transport from the airport to Podgorica. There isn’t, indeed! But there is a train station 0.8 miles (1.2km) from the airport that goes to the city.

If you find it convenient, fantastic. All you have to do is walk across the car park and turn left.

You’ll walk on the tarmac for a bit, then on a gravel road before the railway bridge. There is no train station as such, just a small shack with no attendants.

The train stops here. There are only 10 trains a day, you can see the most up to date schedule here. It costs 1.20€ one way.

Taxi From Podgorica Airport

Like most people, I am not a fan of airport taxis, as many were the times I was scammed one way or another. As you arrive at Podgorica Airport, you will notice there are not drivers hassling you.

There are two companies offering taxi from Podgorica Airport to the city, as well as Budva, Kotor and other cities.

The price is fixed. I’ve got an issue with airport taxi drivers, and although this seems obvious, I’d rather list it here, so just to ensure it’s covered and there are no doubts.

Regular taxis are available and drivers stay outside the airport.

A taxi from Podgorica Airport to the city is fixed at 12€. The car was new-ish, very comfortable but the driver hardly spoke any English.

I explained to him where I was going and he kept saying “I know, centre”. Once we got to the city centre, just past the clock tower, he stopped and said “centre”.

We arrived. I insisted he should take me to the hotel and it came to a point when I just gave up and walked to my hotel with my small carry-on suitcase.

Luckily, the hotel was only 500m from where he stopped.

Private Transfers From Podgorica Airport

An alternative option is pre-booking a car transfer. You can do that directly with the hotel – they will charge you extra for the service – or book it online.
