I have also got full information on how to get from St Petersburg airport to the city that you will find helpful.

Where To Stay In St Petersburg Russia

St Petersburg is very spread out, but the good news is that the vast majority of tourist attractions, as well as the best restaurants and shops, are concentrated in two main areas. Other areas may be more interesting for people visiting the city for business purposes, for example. With no further ado, let me show you where to stay in St Petersburg, I’m sure you will find something suitable for you.

Tsentralny District: The Central Area

If you are travelling to the city for tourism, whether it is your first or fifth time, the best place to stay is the Tsentralny District, aka the city centre. Many of the most important monuments and landmarks are located in this area, making it the best among all places to stay in St Petersburg. This is the area around Nevsky Prospekt where you will find many neo-classic buildings, palaces and museums.

If walking is not for you, there are several metro stations and bus lines along and around Nevsky Prospekt, making it easy to go from one end of the avenue to the other. This area is also where Moskovsky railway station is located. This is the station where trains between St Petersburg and Moscow arrive/depart from – one more reason to make it a convenient area.

Admiralteysky: One of The Best Places To Stay In St Petersburg

This is another good place to stay in St Petersburg. It is also central and, although more residential than Tsentralny, it has some important parks and churches. From here you can still walk to Nevsky Prospekt, that is if you don’t mind walking around 30 minutes to reach it.

The area around Mariinsky Theatre is among the best places to stay in St Petersburg
The Mariinsky Theatre is the most famous in St Petersburg

Other reasons to stay in Admiralteysky include the fact it is slightly cheaper to stay, eat and drink than Tsentralny, as well as the fact that Mariinsky Theatre is located here. This is the most important theatre in St Petersburg and, in fact in the world, home to the Mariinsky Ballet Company. Other landmarks located here include St Nicholas The Naval Cathedral and the Great Synagogue of St Petersburg.

Metro stations in Admiralteysky District include Sennaya, Sadovaya and Pushkinskaya. Vitebsky station, with trains to Belarus, is also located in the area.

Moskovskiy District: Soviet St Petersburg

This area is much further from Tsentralny, making it the most affordable of the three places to stay in St Petersburg that I recommend. While Tsentralny has many neo-classic buildings, Moskovsky is the Soviet side of the city. Buildings here are big and box-like, and mostly from the Communist period.

The main thoroughfare in the area is Moskovsky Prospekt, and in the area you will find a monument to Lenin, something to look for when visiting any major former USSR country. The inconvenience about this area is that you will always depend on some sort of transport to visit the city’s main attractions and at night it is not as vibrant as Tsentralny or Admiralteysky. Also, apart from the few high-end hotels that cater mostly to business people, there is mostly budget accommodation with low ratings on booking sites.

If you are arriving in Saint Petersburg by plane, then this is where you will arrive, as Pulkovo airport is located in the area. Here I explain how to get from the airport to the city.

The Moskovskiy District: Best Hotels Near St Peterburg Airport

Holiday Inn St Petersburg Moskovskye Vorota: The hotel is located near Moskovskye Vorota metro station and only 20 minutes from the city centre. With spacious rooms, a fitness centre, two restaurants and two bars, the hotel has very competitive rates, starting at 70€ per night.

Crowne Plaza St Petersburg Airport: This is one of the best hotels near St Petersburg Airport. It has spacious and modern rooms, a fully equipped gym, sauna, as well as two restaurants and a cafe. I recommend it to be used strictly as an “airport hotel”. As you would expect, it offers a free airport shuttle. There is no direct public transport to the city centre, so the options are taxi or Uber (click here to get your first ride for free), but this is one of the best hotels near St Petersburg airport.

Prima-Apart Hotel: This aparthotel is a good option if you are travelling on a budget and don’t mind taking transport to the tourist area (Tsentralny). Having said that, the nearest metro station is 1.5 miles away. The rooms are comfortable and St Petersburg Airport is less than 1o minutes away by car.
