Where to stay in Colonia del Sacramento, UruguayWhere to stay in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

I would say that the small town of Colonia, on the Uruguayan side of the Plata River (Rio de la Plata), is a nearly mandatory trip for any visitor to Montevideo or Buenos Aires.

Sadly, most tourists visit this UNESCO heritage town on a day trip from Buenos Aires, which I think is a real shame.

The city offers a great variety of hotels, hostels and guest houses, so I thought I’d share with you some suggestions of where to stay in Colonia del Sacramento, based on my experience and on hotels I visited.

Posada del Virrey, a small four-star hotel in colonial style, offers 13 rooms. The location is perfect, in the old town, right between Plaza Mayor, the main square, and the marina.

The decor makes you feel you’re really staying in an old colonial times house, rather than a hotel. The staff is very pleasant and helpful, and the rooms are fairly large and comfortable. Almost all room rates at Posada del Virrey‘s room rates include breakfast.

Don Antonio Posada

Where to Stay in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

Don Antonio Posada calls itself an “inn with the same services as a grand hotel” and is located at the edge of the historic part of town. Many of the rooms, which I found beautiful, although not very spacious, overlook the swimming pool.

It is rated 9/10 by Booking.com guests and second best hotel in Colonia del Sacramento, on TripAdvisor. Also offering free wifi and great service, I think the hotel offers the best value for money among all four-star hotels in Colonia.
