I must confess that, before visiting Angers, I had never heard of it. My visit to the city was almost accidental, except for the fact my trip had been organised by a third party. And I must also confess that I felt like a total idiot, not knowing that such a charming city existed. But how to get to Angers? Well, I arrived there by bike…

How to Get to Angers in The Loire Valley, France

Angers is located in France’s Loire region and is the former capital of the Anjou province. I was cycling the “Loire by Bike” route, or as the French would say, La Loire à Vélo, and was still amidst trees. At some point, the path led me closer to the river and suddenly I was entering the city. That was a beautiful sight, with lowering sun light, the river Maine, the robust castle walls and the towers of the cathedral. You get the picture – literally, below. 🙂

In the evening I went out for dinner with my troupe and could observe how lively the city is. Angers is home to many universities, which gives it a thriving cultural scene and fills its historical streets with young people.

How to Get to Angers in The Loire Valley, FranceThe Green City, as it is known, because of its many parks, has enough attractions to fill two full days, but I could only see a few of them. Walking around the cobbled streets of historical centre, you will spot many old timbered houses. The oldest of them is called La Maison d’Adam and dates from around 1500. The façade of the House of Adam is decorated with wooden sculptures, some of which are very intriguing, especially considering how old it is.

Another attraction, and in fact the city’s main site, is the 12th century Chateau d’Angers. The castle, originally built as a fortress, is surrounded by some sturdy walls and houses a museum. The pièce de résistance is the Apocalypse Tapestry, from the late 14th century. This piece of tapestry measures over 100 metres and many of the scenes depicted are quite freaky. I highly recommend hiring a guide to explain the history and the meaning of the images.

I would have loved to stay a bit longer in Angers, see some of the other museums and enjoy the parks. But I had a bike ride and another 30km (19 miles) ahead of me. Hopefully I’ll be back soon and will visit the neighbouring village of Saint-Barthélemy-d’Anjou, where Cointreau is made. Enough of a good reason to return, don’t you agree? 🙂
