Glamping is a new travel trend I’ve been hearing a lot recently. But what is glamping, exactly? Last year I had the chance to experience it in one of Europe’s most idyllic locations. So come join me, as we explore what it is like to go glamping by Lake Bled, Slovenia.
I arrived mid-afternoon at Camping Bled, located in a forest by the famous Lake bled, where there were many families camping the traditional way – in their own caravans or with the usual basic tent. Further into the forest, but less than 10 minutes’ walk from the lake, was our “special section”: a number of wooden huts and cabins with their own private facilities.
Yes, glamping is a way for you to be close to nature without compromising in comfort and luxury. In other words, glamourous camping!
To be very honest with you, it was everything it’s written on the tin. I was greeted with a nice selection of canapés, natural juice and smoothies, then showed to my hut. I had a nice double bed, spacious enough for a couple, sun lounger and a nice hot tub with my name on it. Everything was maintained to a very high standard that, from my experience, would put some so called five star hotels to shame.
Oh, and the most important thing in the world: free wi-fi with no password everywhere in the extended area! 🙂 For a first timer, it was like a new world was opening up before my eyes.
After getting acquainted with the luxurious facilities, I went for a relaxing full-body massage on-site, with calming music that even made me fall asleep for a few minutes. I was ready to hit the road and explore a bit of Bled, but temptation was too much and I had to make use of the Finnish sauna, just metres from my hut.
Those travelling with the family would still be able to experience glamping in the larger cabins with multiple rooms and sundeck, also available at Camping Bled.
On the few occasions I went camping, the most inconvenient situations was the bathroom arrangements. Before going for dinner, had a nice hot shower in my private bathroom, which was absolutely spotless and comparable to that of many good hotels, with fluffy towels and bathrobe.
After a very nice dinner by Lake Bled, washed down with Slovenian wines, it was time to indulge in my very own hot tub, beer in hand.
The following morning, I was greeted with a picnic basket outside my door, with what turned up to be a full breakfast. A coffee flask, bread, fruits, yoghurt and even cereal, it was much more that I had bargained for.
My first glamping experience left me longing for more. The team’s attention to detail, the private luxurious bathroom, the quality of the breakfast and the extras, like the sauna and hot tub, were much more than I ever expected. Oh, and the bonus? The perfect location by the scenic Lake Bled.
