I first heard of Parque das Aves in Foz do Iguaçu a few years ago, when I met some of their representatives at travel fairs around Europe.  To be honest, even after talking to some people who had been there, I didn’t feel inclined to visit park at first. Not because I don’t like colourful birds, but because I (wrongly) thought I had already seen enough animals – with and without feathers – and imagined it to be a rather dull place. Considering that many people probably have the same opinion, I wanted to share my experience visiting Parque das Aves by the Iguazu Falls, in Brazil – don’t confuse it with the Bird Park in Puerto Iguazu, on the Argentinean side of the border.

VISITING PARQUE DAS AVES NEAR THE IGUAZU FALLS

Considering that Foz Iguaçu is home to the famous Iguazu Falls, one of the main natural attractions in Brazil and Argentina, it’s normal that many people have the same thoughts I did. After all, why would you spend time watching birds when you can see one of the world’s natural wonders? But truth be told, Parque das Aves is much more than a zoo only for feathered animals.

The park was created by Dennis and Anna, who came from Namibia. She’s a vet, he’s in love with birds. Parque das Aves, was inaugurated in 1994 and today is the largest bird park in the whole of Latin America. Home to more than 800 animals of 200 species, is also a shelter for species seized by the Brazilian Federal Police and the Environmental Police. Another detail is that it not only has birds from all over the world but has some mammals and reptiles, and only has native trees to the region.

The park is also responsible for breeding and conservation works. It prioritises natural breeding, where parents incubate and raise their offspring naturally, with minimal human interference.

Now the million-dollar question: is it worth visiting Parque das Aves in Foz do Iguaçu?

MY VISIT TO PARQUE DAS AVES

I went to Parque das Aves shortly after my helicopter flight over Iguazu Falls, as it’s located right opposite heliport, near Parque das Cataratas. The good thing – for me as a blogger – is that they offer free wifi and I was able to connect right at the entrance. That means I could share my visit instantly with my followers. 🙂

My first impression was that it was very organised and really built to ensure safety for visitors and animals alike. The first birds I saw were some flamingoes in a pond. Some were pink, others white.

From that point, I followed the marked paths that lead to different areas. The park is very interesting and the nurseries are quite spacious. Some of them are as high as 30 metres, giving larger birds extra space to roam and fly.

Each nursery has a sign in English, Portuguese and Spanish that explains the animal’s origin, latin name and habits.

After seeing dozens of species of birds, from tiny multicoloured ones to huge birds of prey, I walked to a semi-open area with several parrots and macaws, one more interesting and more colourful than the other. At the very end, in one of the last nurseries, there was a huge number of blue macaws and toucans. In fact, a little toucan was following me for most of my visit. It flew, stopped, jumped from one fence to another, and flew very low over my head.

My visit to Parque das Aves lasted about two hours, but I could have quietly stayed at least another hour. If you’re travelling to Foz do Iguaçu with children, then you must visit the park. If I enjoyed it myself, I can imagine how much fun kids will have there.

So, do you still want to know if it’s worth visiting Parque das Aves near Iguazu Falls? Of course, it is!
