St Petersburg, Russia’s second biggest city, is one of those places I could go back to over and over again. So much so that last year I was in the city on three different occasions. It’s one of those places I could actually see myself living in for a while, since I already know a lot and still find it very exciting. I especially like strolling along Nevsky Prospekt, the city’s main avenue. So, nothing more natural than choosing to stay at Corinthia Hotel St Petersburg, the city’s largest luxury hotel, located right on one of Russia’s most iconic avenues.

I travelled from Moscow to St Petersburg by train – much better than flying! – and the hotel’s proximity to the railway station meant I only had to walk seven minutes to reach it. But that’s only one of the reasons I think the hotel location is perfect.

The hotel is also very close to many of St Petersburg’s tourist attractions including the Fabergé Museum, the Fontanka river and the trendy Rubinsteyna street, where you will find dozens of cool bars and restaurants lined up one after another. And if like me, you prefer to use public transport to get that local feel, there are four metro stations close by.

Arriving at the Corinthia St Petersburg, it’s impossible not to be amazed by the lavish lobby. With double-height ceiling, several pillars and an imposing grand staircase, it is a modern luxury hotel with a classic feel.

My check-in was very smooth and the receptionist was really pleasant and obliging, explaining to me all details of my booking and my stay, and recommending the services of their concierge if I needed tickets for theatres or any other attraction. She was an absolute star – and I feel bad for not recalling her name.

I then headed to my room which was, as I would expect, very well-appointed. The colour scheme was predominantly brown and white, giving it a slightly more masculine feel that I really liked. As I entered, there was a small corridor with the large wardrobe to the left and bathroom to the right. The bedroom itself was spacious, with a super king-size bed – saying that it was comfortable would be an understatement, I found out later.

The room also had a well-equipped working desk with several electric sockets next to it, a cupboard with a fully stocked minibar that included soft drinks, vodka – of course! – and other alcoholic drinks. The wall beside the bed was covered by a mirror and aligned by what could be a dresser or a second, much longer desk.

The room also had a small round table with chair and a chaise longue. To complete the amenities, there was a Nespresso machine that I came to use a lot during my stay and LCD TV.

Oh, and I can’t forget to tell you how much I liked the bathroom. How can I? Although I don’t always use bathtubs, I loved having the option to use it instead of the super shower. The cool factor was the TV built into the wall, so I could take a bath and watch the news if I wanted to. And the high-quality Espa toiletries were a real treat!

During my stay, I was always early for breakfast, which served in the Imperial Restaurant. It’s located on the first floor and overlooks the busy Nevsky Prospekt and I recommend choosing a table by the window.

The buffet is absolutely huge with several options of cold and hot food, as well as fruits, pastries and even champagne.

The Imperial Restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner, when the atmosphere completely changes, with some very folks dressed rather elegantly.

Corinthia Hotel St Petersburg also has two bars and stylish Café Vienna, where they serve light meals including salads, soups, sandwiches and some of the best desserts you will find in St Petersburg. Needless to say, the coffee is also perfect – my cappuccino was frothy and not too milky, just the way I like it.

As much as I tried to find faults at the hotel – I’m the “hotel inspector” type of guest – it was hard to find anything negative to talk about. My room was well-appointed, comfortable and very functional. Breakfast had and abundance of options and prepared with all sorts of tastes in mind and with attention to every single detail.

And the staff, from my arrival to departure, including all those bits in between, when we catch them half off-guard, was really pleasant and always tried to ensure my needs were attended for. I believe it is their attention to detail that makes the Corinthia St Petersburg an iconic luxury hotel. And deservedly so.
