On my latest trip to Southeast Asia, I spent quite a few days in the Malaysian capital. On one of those occasions when I was flying into and out of the country, I had the chance to stay at Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral.

Stay At Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral

Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral (yes, with S) is a lifestyle hotel full of personality and life. My stay, despite short, couldn’t have been better.

The hotel is located right by KL Sentral Railway Station, the city’s main transport hub and final stop for the airport train. Kuala Lumpur Sentral is the city’s new up-and-coming neighbourhood, connected to the rest of KL by the mentioned hub, and home to many important companies, banks and some of the city’s best hotels.

To prove that the location is perfect, the hotel even has its own bridge that connects it to the station and the next-door Nu Sentral, one of the city’s many shopping malls.

I arrived at the hotel coming from the train station and immediately felt the sense of space and the young vibe. The hotel is colourful very bright, which makes it unique and playful.

The reception staff was on the ball but very relaxed – far from the stuck-up attitude I’ve come across so many times. Right opposite the reception area there was one of the hotel’s food outlets, RE:Fuel. The space is an interesting concept, a kind of “honesty bar” where guests help themselves soft drinks, fresh fruits and other snacks and write down their consumption.

Since the team already knew I was only staying for one night, with a very early morning flight, they didn’t hold me back at the front desk. My check-in was very quick and soon I was shown around the main parts of the hotel.

Aloft Hotels are known as “A Vision of W”, referring to Starwood’s cool and uber trendy W Hotels. Aloft is the younger sister: cool, very stylish, more energetic and with a no-fuss attitude.

I was already familiar with their philosophy, as I stayed at Aloft Brussels a few years ago. But Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral has a few extras that makes it better than the others – I’ll talk about that in a minute.

My room was on the 27th floor and had great views of the area. The room itself was of good size with a king-size bed, working desk, TV and a giant and comfy pink beanbag. The decor was also colourful and vibrant, like the rest of the hotel. Luckily, there were some treats waiting for me – who would say no to some macaroons?

The bathroom area was also spacious and open-plan. A large area with a fully equipped wardrobe, where my tea and coffee set was kept, along with complimentary bottles of water, takeaway coffee cups as well as a safe, bathrobes and slippers.

The room had Aloft’s own branded toiletries, with full dental and shaving kits, in addition to shower gel, shampoo and body lotion.

The shower room and toilet were separated by a wall, and the space was set up in such a way that multiple guests – a couple, for example – could use the area without interfering with each others privacy.

True to its young nature, the hotel has a computer area downstairs. There, you can just sit by a computer and work – or play – for as long as you want.

Talking about computers, the hotel offers free wifi in all rooms and public areas. I was very happy with the speed and could use it without interruptions.

Swimming Pool

Aloft KL Sentral has a rooftop infinity pool overlooking Sentral’s highrises. Not the classic Kuala Lumpur view, but still very nice.  The poolside atmosphere is very relaxed and while I was there I had the most fantastic weather.

A member of the hotel team was always there to help us, offering a towel or a drink.

Restaurants & Bars

In addition to RE:Fuel, “W XYZ Bar” on the ground floor, Aloft KL Sentral has an international restaurant offering breakfast, lunch and dinner and a rooftop bar.

During my stay, the hotel had a special theme week, when they invited a chef from Aloft Bangkok to cook the best of the Thai cuisine in the Malaysian capital.

Nook Restaurant, following the hotel style, is very bright and the decor is young and playful. I was sitting in a clear pod, from where I could see pretty much the whole restaurant.

Given Malaysia’s multi-cultural nature, the restaurant offers Malay, Chinese, Indian cuisines, as well as salads and many fresh seafood.

I tried several different dishes from the restaurant regular offerings, as well as some of the Thai specials. Needless to say, presentation was great and the food was delicious.

After dinner, I had the chance to greet the chefs and went for a quick drink at Mai Bar, the hotel’s poolside bar. The music was playing full on and I loved the atmosphere. If it wasn’t for my early morning flight, I could have stayed there for hours. But before heading to bed, I still had time to try their signature cocktail, the Malaysian Princess Mai Tai – silver rum pressed with blueberries and kaffir lime, topped with golden rum, pineapple and orange juice, served in a Tiki-themed mug. It sounds good, and tastes even better!

After a great night’s sleep, I woke up very early go to the airport. Since it was too early for breakfast, I had some fruit and yoghurt from RE:Fuel.

My check-out was very quick and efficient. The hotel arranged a car transfer for me in a Toyota Innova and my driver was already waiting.

There was no traffic, so the journey to Kuala Lumpur Airport took around 35 minutes.

To me, Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral got everything right. Even though it is bigger than the other Aloft Hotels around the world, it does get everything right. Surely because of the staff. Throughout my stay, my encounters with the Aloft team were all very pleasant, and full of smiles. As a hotel person, they were all the kind of people I would choose to work with.

It is hard to point one single fault, because in all honesty, they got everything right. The only sad thing? I stayed for just one night!

Very cool feature on the Aloft Hotel! I never knew that it was the sister hotel of W, but looking at your pictures, I can definitely see the resemblance! I go to KL pretty often, and will definitely consider staying here in future!

I like how modern it looks. The room seems really functional and comfortable. Looks like you had everything you needed and it was a good experience.

Oh wow. I love the funky colours and that swimming pool looks amazing. When I was in KL the swimming pool was rubbish with no view so this would definitely be a winner for me.

And mind you, I was lucky to be there during the special Thai week, so I could try different types of cuisines.

Those roof top pools that go right to the edge are awesome. Very good post. I have a possible hotel review coming up and I found this post inspiring.
