My experience with Novotel Surin Beach Resort started even before I got there. I arrived from Bangkok around midday, collected my suitcase and went to meet my driver from the hotel. Having an airport transfer is definitely a plus, and the driver was extremely courteous. Who doesn’t want to just sit and relax, have a bottle of cold water on your way to your hotel?
REVIEW: NOVOTEL PHUKET SURIN BEACH RESORT
It was my first time in Phuket and I was looking forward to it. Despite the weather forecast for rain throughout my stay, the sun was shining when I arrived at Novotel Phuket.
Surin Beach is one of those quieter locations in Phuket and is a favourite with A-list celebrities – Rihanna loves it there.
Upon my arrival, I was greeted by the receptionist, who had that welcoming smile that makes you love Thailand, and soon I was escorted to my room.
The room was absolutely huge, decorated with dark furniture and with a nice dark wooden floor. It had a separate living area from bedroom, which made it really spacious and ideal to accommodate a small family.
The living room had a nice sofa that could be turned into a bed, a working desk and a small coffee table with fresh tropical fruits, as well as traditional Thai delicacies specially prepared by the resident chef.
The bedroom was also spacious, with a large king-size bed beautifully decorated with an elephant towel and a “welcome” made with local leaves. The room was very well equipped and had all conveniences you would need if you’re travelling with your partner or with your family. That included an iron and ironing board, a kettle with tea and coffee sets, as well as plenty of free bottles of water.
The bathroom was not huge, but of perfect size with a good shower. The hotel offers full amenity kits from Fair Trade – this is something I love at hotels around Asia!
After enjoying my suite, it was time to explore the resort. And how easy that was, since my room had a floor-to-ceiling glass door that took me straight to the main swimming pool! Shall we talk about the pool, then?
The swimming pool at this Novotel Phuket is a gigantic one that goes around almost the whole resort. It gives guests enough room to swim and won’t make you feel like you’re in a crowded area.
It also has a waterslide for children and is surrounded by comfortable deck chairs and stylish umbrellas. Tall palm trees and other plants remind you that you’re in one of the world’s best tropical islands and also give the rooms more privacy.
Relaxing and Keeping Fit
The hotel also has a fully equipped fitness centre with workout machines, treadmills and a free weight area. If you’re feeling fit enough or want a challenge, I recommend taking a private Muay Thai lesson, as I did at Novotel Karon Beach. It’s well worth it!
But on this occasion, I was more in a relaxing mood and went for a Thai massage. In their usual manner, the therapist was really pleasant and made me feel comfortable before the session. If you think Thai massage is about gentle touches and pressures, you just happen to be wrong, very wrong.
The massage therapist looked sweet and gentle. But she knew what she was doing. Thai massage combines a number of movements and twists that I never thought it was possible to do it. One moment she would twist my arm one way. Then another way. Next, she’d force me to stretch one leg while my torso was in a semi-spiral position that was both painful and strange.
At the end of my massage, however, I felt more rejuvenated and relaxed than any other types of massage made me feel before.
Eating and Drinking at Novotel Surin Beach
The property has five bars and restaurants, including the newly opened Sushi Bar. For dinner, I went to Champions Bar & Grill, the hotel’s casual sports bar. They serve everything, from nachos and burgers to traditional Thai dishes. As they say, “when in Thailand, do like the Thai people”, and so I did.
As a starter, I chose a tom kha gai soup, my favourite Thai dish: a spicy soup with vegetables, chicken and coconut milk. Then I continued with local dishes as a main course and dessert – thank you, chef Jason!
After an amazing night’s sleep – the bed was really comfy! – I went for a late breakfast. Struggling to get out of bed, I went for breakfast.
The buffet was really vast and I particularly liked the decoration of carved fruit and vegetables. I didn’t eat much, just a nice omelette with bacon and onions and my usual croissant with a cappuccino.
My check out went very smoothly and my transfer was already there waiting for me.
All and all, I was very pleased with my stay at Novotel Surin Beach. I found the service very courteous, the staff seemed to really want to help me. The room, as I mentioned, was very spacious and well equipped – I couldn’t think of anything they missed! The leisure facilities are really good and Surin Beach is only a few minutes’ walk from the hotel.
