Sometimes you love a hotel because of the style. Sometimes because of the high quality of the service provided and the staff “can-do” attitude. Occasionally, the location gets the top score. But what do you do when you stay at a hotel that gets all these points and has that extra unbeatable point?

Stay at Swissotel Moscow review

Well, I recently had the chance to stay at Swissôtel Krasnye Holmy in Moscow and I had just that. It was the first time that I stayed somewhere in Moscow that’s not a short walk from the Red Square or the Bolshoy Theatre. But even that proved to be a winner. Let me explain.

MY STAY AT SWISSÔTEL KRASNYE HOLMY, MOSCOW

The Perfect Location

The hotel is located in the business district of Moscow, in a small island of the Moskva River, right by the Moscow International House of Music. Swissôtel Moscow is also perfectly located near Paveletsky station, where the Aeroexpress trains from Domodedovo International airport arrive. I always prefer to use the metro (subway) system, especially in Moscow. And Paveletskaya station is also a short walk away.

The Hotel

The hotel is located in a 34-storey glass tower and from the outside it’s hard to guess what the interiors will be like. As I arrived at the Swissôtel Krasnye Holmy, I was greeted by the doorman and went straight to the reception desk. The lobby is very modern and stunning, with a very high ceiling and lots of natural light and a casual bar with comfy sofas to the left. The receptionist was very pleasant, spoke very good English – something not common even at luxury hotels around Russia – and explained about the location and booking.

My Suite at Swissôtel Krasnye Holmy

The receptionist accompanied me to my suite, located on the 22nd floor, to show me around. Upon entering, I couldn’t help but notice how spacious it was. Just like the rest of the hotel, my Executive Suite was modern, with wooden floors, a spacious living room with sitting area, a working desk and a round dining table with some nice welcome treat a fruit platter and a small plate with sweet treats. There was also a kettle and an espresso machine – perfect for a coffee-addict like me.

The bedroom was also very well appointed, with a large king-size bed, a stylish chaise longue and a wardrobe with a safe, emergency torch and had enough space for a small family. The sense of space was amplified by the large door that, when opened, turned the bedroom and the living room into one single area. On the bedside table, there was a pillow menu, so I could choose from a U-shaped pillow to better fit my head, to a Swiss pine shavings pillow, with “a calming scent of resin that offers you a deeper sleep all night long”.

Talking about space, the bathroom had plenty. The modern and stylish decor went to the bathroom, which had a deep bathtub as a centrepiece and two separate showers – any honeymooners out there? There was a sink on each side of the large sliding door. Swissôtel uses Pürovel toiletries, which I was unfamiliar with, but really liked it.

The whole suite was very impressive. But the final feature that will make you want to stay in for the entire stay, is the view. From the 22nd floor, I had some fantastic views over Moscow. I spent quite some time by the door-to-ceiling windows, watching the boats on the Moskva River, the intense traffic over the bridge and the city skyline. Only when you’re so high above ground can you appreciate how magnificent Moscow is.

Dining at City Space Bar & Restaurant

Swissôtel Moscow has two restaurants: Acapella, serving international and contemporary cuisine, located on the second floor, while City Space Bar & Restaurant is on the 34th floor, offering 360-degree views over Moscow. Following the circular shape of the building, you can go around the place to get different angles of the city (note: it is not a revolving restaurant).

City Space Bar & Restaurant Moscow

I loved that, once I was shown to my table, the hostess gave me some long-range binoculars to enjoy the views. City Space has a casual and vibrant ambience and, to get in the mood, the waiter suggested I tried one of the bar cocktails. I chose the one called “Almost Healthy”, with vodka, blackberry liqueur, passion fruit, fresh raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, fructose and orange juice – very more-ish.

As a starter, I ordered a beef salad served in a crunchy and edible bowl. My main course was a tuna fillet with grilled vegetables and caramelised chilli sauce. They were so good and filling that I had to skip dessert.

Leisure Facilities

You will be amazed by how many luxury hotels in Moscow and St Petersburg lack any sort of leisure facilities. I was delighted to find out that Swissôtel Kraznye Holmy was ahead of the competition with an indoor pool and a jacuzzi, as well as a steam room and Finnish sauna. On top of that, the hotel also offers the Pürovel Spa & Sport, with treatment rooms for a number of spa treatments and a fully equipped gym, with machines and a free-weight area.

What About Breakfast?

Breakfast, served in the Acapella Restaurant and the Executive Lounge – if you’re staying in one of the premium suites – really kept the whole hotel standard. The restaurant itself is modern contemporary and the breakfast buffet is vast, with several options of pastries, fresh fruits, cold and hot dishes.

Unlike most people, I tend to eat less in the morning, but I still managed to have some pastries and cold meat one morning, and some sausages, cereal with yoghurt followed by hash brown and eggs the day after.

Final Thoughts

My two nights at Swissôtel Krasnye Holmy went by very quickly, it felt. I loved waking up to the view of the Moskva River and the city skyline right in front of me. The staff really went way beyond their call of duties to make my stay special, especially during my dinner at City Space and the front desk team. And, of course, the hotel proximity to Paveletsky station made my journey to Domodedovo airport easier and stress-free.
